What will you be doing? As a project manager at ESI you have a wide responsibility for your projects, This includes key account management, project definition & execution and leadership of the technical teams. You will have a portfolio of multi-year projects with leading system integrators in The Netherlands and across Europe. Many of our projects are public private funded and you will ensure that project results are of the highest quality and fulfil the needs of all stakeholders, both public and private.
You will develop and foster long term relationships with our project partners working closely with their strategic management. Here you will define new projects to solve real business issues or to bring new technologies into industrial practice in the field of System Engineering. Your role includes the preparation of detailed project proposals and plans for submission to funding authorities and our project partners. Once projects are up and running you manage them and balance the changing needs as the projects progress. You give leadership to the team and communicate progress and results to all stakeholders. In addition to executing the projects successfully you are aware of any human issues within the team and can provide coaching to stimulate personal growth and to maintain a positive team spirit.
The projects are executed in close collaboration with the client’s product development teams at the premises of the industrial project partner.
What do we require of you?You have an engineering degree (e.g. computer science, electrical engineering, physics) at academic level, with a relevant professional background, working in- or with high-tech industry with a proven track record in driving applied research or product innovation projects. You have demonstrable affinity with systems engineering. You have the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new technical and application domains quickly.
You have at least several years of experience with High-Tech industrial R&D, either directly with industry or through R&D activities closely linked with industry. You preferably have a system architect background, or at least understand the complex challenges of innovative multidisciplinary projects. You are a goal-oriented self-driving professional, illustrating a high level of personal responsibility to deliver quality results. You enjoy coordinating multidisciplinary teams of research fellows, product innovation specialists and academic scientists who develop new methods and techniques for design and engineering of complex high-tech systems. You operate both on the conceptual and operational level and have experience in creating structure and overview in programs and projects.
Preferably, you have built up a track record in influencing business decisions and directions, based on your technological insight and personality. You are capable to deal with uncertainty, in your daily work you will be able to swiftly adopt changing challenges, going the extra mile when necessary.

The ESI strategic research programme focuses on the development of latest techniques for design and engineering of high-tech (embedded) systems and applications within a rapidly changing technology environment. Multi-disciplinary teams of experts of renowned (multi)national high-tech enterprises, SMEs, and leading academic research groups work together and link fundamental research results directly to industrial application. The dedicated ESI competence development programme supports system architects and industrial engineers in developing their professional skills. Overall, the ESI network represents a unique platform for open innovation that facilitates research cooperation and knowledge exchange across stakeholders.
ESI, founded in 2002 as the Embedded Systems Institute and integrated in TNO in 2013, has recently been raised to the level of Joint Innovation Centre in TNO. Since becoming part of TNO, we have grown in people and activities by about 50% in an expanding ecosystem of high-tech enterprises and national and international academic institutions. Its (founding) partners are industry-leading companies ASML, NXP, Océ, Philips, Thales and TNO, along with Delft University of Technology, Radboud University and Eindhoven University of Technology.
